Self-Driving Technology
For our topic, our group decided to research self-driving cars. We chose this technology because this topic fascinates us and can be a real possibility for the future. Self-driving technology could be the future of the automotive industry. As the technology behind self-driving cars advances from simple cruise control to fully automated vehicles, firms like Toyota, Nissan, and more can adopt this technology as it might be a good solution to human-error car crashes. Self-driving technology will improve safety and save human lives from the psychological effects of “road rage” and simple human error. We also suggest three main alternative solutions, namely increasing requirements to obtain a driver’s license, improving roads, their lighting, and lowering speed limits, and moving towards service driving. Ultimately, self-driving technology proves to be the best solution to improve safety on the road.
How Automated Can Cars Be?
Automated cars are identified on six levels ranging from 0 to 5, with each level being increasingly automated. Level 0 automation gives the user, namely the driver, full control.
Level 1 automation allows the car to accelerate itself or self-steer.
Level 2 automation includes features such as cruise control and lane centering.
Level 3 automation still requires a driver, but all “safety-critical functions” are done by the vehicle unless the driver intervenes. Cars such as Tesla’s self-driving model operate at level 3 automation.
Level 4 automation is fully autonomous, as the car is capable of performing all “safety-critical functions” and is all to self-drive for the entire duration of the trip. However, it does not know how to operate in all situations. There are no available cars on the market with level 4 automation.
Level 5 automation, the highest level of automation, performs exactly as a human driver would, being able to operate in all conditions and scenarios. Such cars do not require drivers or steering wheels. There are no available cars on the market with level 5 automation
